Most beginners ask "which filament is best" as if there's one right answer. There isn't — each of these three does a different job well. Here's the real breakdown.
PLA — start here
PLA is the easiest material to print, full stop. It doesn't warp much, doesn't need an enclosure, doesn't smell while printing, and prints at a lower temperature than the alternatives. The trade-off: it's more brittle and softens at a relatively low temperature, so it's not the choice for anything that sits in a hot car or does mechanical work under load.
Best for: decorative prints, prototypes, low-stress functional parts, anything printed indoors.
PETG — the practical middle ground
PETG is tougher and more heat-resistant than PLA, with decent layer adhesion and far less brittleness. It's a common choice once you've outgrown PLA's limitations but don't want ABS's warping and fume issues. It does string more than PLA if your settings aren't dialled in, and it's slightly trickier to get a clean surface finish on.
Best for: outdoor parts, functional brackets, anything that needs to survive a bit of abuse or heat.
ABS — strongest, but demanding
ABS is tougher again, more heat-resistant than PETG, and can be smoothed with acetone vapour for a professional finish. The catch: it warps badly without an enclosed, heated chamber, and it releases fumes that genuinely need ventilation. This isn't a material for an open-frame printer in a bedroom.
Best for: mechanical parts, anything needing real heat resistance, printers with an enclosed chamber like the Kobra S1 Max.
